RESEARCH
Who is Take Root ?
- Take Root is an after-school, garden-based, science and nutrition, outreach program
- EWU students train to be program instructors & site coordinators and work closely with Shaw CTE middle school teacher (Rhonda Leibrecht) as well as the Shaw middle school CISSC site coordinator (Melanee McClary)
- School-aged participants will develop a sense of environmental awareness
What do they do?
The purpose of the after-school program Take Root is to enhance students' abilities to draw connections to core and other content standards that connect to the Integrated Environmental and Sustainability Education Learning Standards. Students participating in schools of Spokane County (CISSC) programs need to meet the 7-8th grade Washington State Health & Fitness, thus the purpose for this program. Take Root strives to engage students in outdoor recreational, garden-based, and health promotion activities designed to connect with self, others and nature. They want to encourage healthy lifestyle habits and environmental awareness skills.
DELIVERABLE'S
Logo Design
One of my roles for this project was to design a logo for the program that appeals to 7th & 8th graders and staff for the program. When you think of the words Take Root, you think of "something rooted in the ground growing and becoming strong"- Take Root Coordinator. Thinking of those characteristics, I found trees mirror similar qualities. The doodled swirls represent the tree rings inside of a tree that display the trees growth. The swirls also represent the unique thumb print pattern of each student and how they can self-identify in Take Root. Lastly, the green color symbolizes growth, safety, and environment.

Promotional Poster Design
My other role for this project was to create a promotional poster that relates to 7th & graders and draws their attention. The concept behind the poster was to make a design so detailed and self-identifying that you couldn’t help but stop and stare. Our Take Root brand strives to connect with students on a different level by creating an easily relatable visual similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid that students can recognize. Our Take Root designs welcome all types of students to come learn nutrition based science in a fun interactive way. Our fruit characters give students fun way to view themselves making smoothies just like in the program! Overall, this poster gives the Take Root program an inviting look for students to see while representing garden-based leaning and health.
